"BEAUTY AND REFLECTION"

The Work of Laura Anido Serrano
BY: ÁNGEL ALONSO

Art criticism at the magazine "ARTEPOLI"

Copyright by Ángel Alonso

“Long before the mind can explain why an object is beautiful, the aesthetic sense perceives the beauty in the object.”
Jinarajadasa

In its quest to challenge norms and expand its expressive possibilities, contemporary art has shown a tendency to value ideas over aesthetics and prioritize concepts over form. Its achievements in the fields of installation art, new media, and immersive experiences have captured the attention of collectors and critics alike. While this approach has been enriching in terms of the development of expressive languages and has undeniably led to significant achievements in various creative fields, it has also had its darker side. The generalization of these radical stances has created a void in the aesthetic experience, fostering prejudices against traditional yet equally valid mediums such as painting and drawing.

Within this elitist perspective where beauty is seen as superficial or trivial, and provocation and social criticism have become the pillars of artistic validation a false idea of what contemporary art truly is has taken root. Important artworks have been overlooked, despite often being more sincere and introspective than those that merely follow trends.
If many artists today express themselves through sculpture, painting, printmaking, or drawing, then their works are just as contemporary as those created, for example, using digital resources.

As art critic Robert Hughes points out in The Shock of the New, art should be an experience that awakens emotions and sensations, not just an intellectual reflection. Beauty, in its purest form, has the power to connect people, evoke memories, and inspire hope. In this sense, Laura Anido Serrano’s work emerges as a response to this absence, offering a celebration of beauty that is both visual and emotional.

From the very beginning, Laura has demonstrated an exceptional talent for capturing beauty in her works. Her portraits are not just visual representations; they also tell stories. Each woman she portrays is a tribute to the strength and delicacy that coexist in femininity a concept that could also be criticized by those who consider it politically incorrect. The flowers and animals surrounding her models are not mere decorations; they are symbols of life, growth, and connection with nature elements that the artist masterfully integrates.

Originally from Cuba and now residing in Germany, Laura has dedicated her career to exploring the connection between femininity and nature. She also has another artistic approach that combines drawing with abstract expressionism, but we will address that at another time. For now, it seems more interesting to focus on this particular aspect of her work: her captivating portraits.

On her website, Laura Art Corner, the artist states: “My works seek to awaken in people a feeling of warmth, welcome, and even beauty. Why not? I believe that art should also be a transmitter of beauty and hope.” In a world that often feels chaotic, her creations offer a moment of respite a chance to appreciate the beauty that surrounds us.

Beyond being a painter and draftsman, she is a visual storyteller who uses her talent to inspire and empower others. Through her portraits, she reminds us of the importance of celebrating our roots and our connection to the natural world.

In works like "Autumn Impressions", the balance of dark spaces stands out, arranged in such a way that any variation would disrupt the achieved harmony. The drawing is as rigorous as it is graceful everything is in its place, and nothing could be changed, not even the size or direction of the flowers, without ruining the balance.

Other pieces are equally harmonious yet bolder, such as "Refuge". In this case, the artist dares to position the figure’s head in the lower half of the painting. However, the upper space is far from arbitrary; it justifies itself through semicircular forms and diagonal curves that sustain them, balancing the composition and transforming the viewer’s journey into a delicate pleasure. In her drawings, she emphasizes soft and sensitive chiaroscuro, while in her paintings, she harnesses the impact of color and the power of contrasts. But in both artistic languages, she is distinguished by her delicacy and precision.

We are witnessing an artist who pays close attention to the sensory experience of the viewer, establishing a mode of communication that is more emotional than intellectual. Her focus on beauty is not a denial of the world’s problems but rather an affirmation that beauty and reflection can coexist.
